7 Reasons Commercial Solar Power Makes Sense for Your Business

December 22, 2022

The sun is an amazing energy source you can harness to add value to your business. Whether you're motivated by your customers, values, climate action, your bottom line, or a combination of all the above, solar can provide powerful solutions for your business. Below are some reasons to consider commercial solar power.

1. Get a Great Return on Investment

One of the biggest advantages of installing commercial solar power is getting an amazing return on your investment. The initial cost may be significant, but tax credits, accounting strategies, and local incentives can all ensure an investment in solar pays off. You'll save money on energy bills and other operational costs when you begin generating your own power, you no longer have to rely solely on the grid.

2. Lower Your Operating Costs

All businesses strive to cut operational costs. One way to do this is by using solar power. Electricity accounts for a large portion of your total operating expenses. If you can cut costs in that area, you'll have freed cash flow for other expenses. If you own a small business, incorporating solar energy into your workplace may seem like an expensive or risky proposition. However, by investing in solar now, you can control and reduce your long-term business costs.

3. Control Your Energy Bill

As an entrepreneur, you likely know how difficult it can be to predict upcoming operating costs. You may not be sure what unexpected scenarios or emergencies will come up. When you install solar power, you eliminate the unpredictability that comes with fluctuating energy bills. You'll have better expectations of your energy bills every month, aiding in future planning and budgeting.

4. Enjoy Minimal Maintenance

Switching to new technology can feel scary, especially for something as significant as energy. Fortunately, solar power installation is fast and efficient and long-term maintenance is minimal. Modules made of tempered glass are built to withstand a variety of weather conditions, allowing them to produce clean energy for decades. Very few mechanical components are involved in the entire system, limiting the likelihood of maintenance, breakdown, and replacement.

5. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Many businesses in the U.S. are going green to reduce their carbon footprint, and you can as well. Commercial solar power is a clean, renewable energy. Are you ready to help the world stand against climate change? This is your chance to join other businesses doing the same. According to Investopedia, the U.S. is the second leading producer of solar energy, following China. Clearly, businesses across the United States are working to play a role in mitigating climate change. Join the fight by installing solar power.

6. Boost Your Brand Appeal

Your public image and reputation are paramount to attracting customers and investors. Installing commercial solar power shows that you are continuing your efforts toward green and sustainable practices. Once your employees, customers, and stakeholders see that you’re making an investment for the planet, people, and environment, they’ll be sure to share your story. Plus, you'll feel great knowing you're making a difference in the world.

7. Increase Your Property Value

Solar arrays can produce clean, valuable energy for 30 or more years, making an installation on your business a valuable asset. In Wisconsin, your property taxes cannot be raised because of a solar or other renewable installation, ensuring that long-term costs are limited. Commercial buildings with energy-producing solar already installed are sure to fetch a premium on the market, as well.

It's clear to see that solar power is a great option for your business, large or small. Invest in solar power today and enjoy all of the benefits mentioned above. To get started with commercial solar power services, call our team at Northwind Solar today. We can't wait to hear from you and discuss how we can help your business garner even more success.

Northwind Solar will Transition Forward Note: This communication from Northwind Solar CEO Josh Stolzenburg is a message to our stakeholders, clients, and friends about an exciting new development at Northwind. I’ve been consumed, for nearly two decades now, leading a passion project called Northwind Solar. Originally conceived to provide meaningful work for those who wanted to advance climate and energy solutions, we’ve grown into one of Wisconsin’s most effective and respected solar companies. Thirty committed employees (of whom 16 share ownership) now work out of our Amherst office. The time has come for me to step out of the role of CEO, shift my Northwind work to new priorities, and cultivate next generation leadership. As a company, we have matured over the years and come a long way from the conceptual white boards I scrawled on the walls of a friend’s basement in 2007, My crude “business plan” evolved from educational work (with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association) which fueled my desire to put meaningful green kilowatt hours on the Wisconsin grid to offset fossil fuel use. I engaged a couple of technically proficient business partners in 2008 and we began to offer wind, solar heating, and solar electric to suit the needs of a growing customer base. In the mid-teens we shifted our exclusive focus to solar electric (including battery systems and, now, smart electrification). From the beginning, community involvement was an important corollary to our professional work. My early involvement with the development of the Central Rivers Farmshed and work with the WI Farmer’s Union led to compelling work with and support for local small farms. Until recently, I’ve advised Mid-State Technical College’s renewable energy program since it’s inception in 2008 and we’ve been able to hire graduates of that program consistently since 2010. I’ve served on the Renew WI board of directors since 2019 and helped to create SolarShare WI, a thriving community solar investment cooperative. Part of the Northwind ethos has been distributed management and shared ownership. We formalized that in 2017 when we converted from a partnership to a worker owned cooperative. Employees could buy in, become owners, and share in the financial rewards and governance. In the seven years since there have been challenges, successes, and changes in personnel as we have learned to be a democratic company.
